UK Implements Significant Changes to Skilled Worker Visa Fees and Salary Thresholds

UK Implements Significant Changes to Skilled Worker VisaAs of April 9, 2025, the UK Home Office has introduced notable adjustments to the Skilled Worker Visa program, impacting application fees and salary requirements for prospective applicants and their employers.

Increased Visa Fees

The fee structure for Skilled Worker Visas has been revised as follows:

  • Skilled Worker Visa (up to 3 years): Increased from £719 to £769.
  • Skilled Worker Visa (more than 3 years): Increased from £1,420 to £1,519.
  • Certificate of Sponsorship: Substantial rise from £239 to £525.

These adjustments represent a significant increase, particularly the Certificate of Sponsorship fee, which has more than doubled. Employers should note that they are legally prohibited from passing these costs onto employees. Large providers of agricultural labor, among others, have reported considerable profit losses due to these changes.

Higher Salary Thresholds

In addition to fee increases, the minimum salary requirement for Skilled Worker Visa applicants has been raised to £38,700 per year. This change aims to ensure that migrant workers are employed in higher-skilled and better-paid positions. The adjustment aligns with the government's efforts to reduce net migration and encourage the employment of domestic workers.

Implications for Employers and Applicants

These changes carry significant implications:

Employment Law Worldview

Employers: Must adjust recruitment budgets to accommodate higher sponsorship fees and salary thresholds. Industries heavily reliant on migrant labor, such as healthcare and agriculture, may face increased financial strain. The sudden implementation of these fee increases has drawn criticism for lack of prior consultation and transparency.

Applicants: Face stricter eligibility criteria due to elevated salary requirements. Prospective migrants must secure higher-paying positions to qualify for the Skilled Worker Visa, potentially limiting opportunities for lower-paid roles.

These policy shifts reflect the UK government's intent to tighten immigration controls while addressing labor shortages. Employers and applicants are advised to stay informed about these changes and plan accordingly.
